The
Social Mitosis
(Summary Page) |
| Human society is like a living organism. From a single cell, the structure of society divides and multiplies as it becomes a multi-celled creature. Its structure is defined in terms of a set of institutions having specialized functions. Modern societies are structurally more complex and pluralistic than primitive ones. There is a division of power between the major institutions. We call this a process of "social mitosis". | ||||
This process of institutional development correlates with the scheme of historical epoch. In each epoch, a different institution becomes developed. The creative energy involved in this process allows the institution to dominate the society and its culture during that period of time. |
We illustrate this process in a diagram that shows the emergence of each institution. A narrative of the process appears in the explanatory notes accompanying the diagram. (826 words) |
