About the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilization: How to Join
We are writing to invite you to join the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations (ISCSC). ISCSC is a nonpolitical, nonprofit scholarly organization dedicated to bringing scholars interested in the study of civilizations. The Society was formally established in 1961 in Salzburg by the historian Othmar Anderle, Arnold J.Toynbee and Rushton Coulborn. Sociologist Pitirim Sorokin was the Society's first president. In 1970, the Society's leadership crossed the Atlantic as Benjamin Nelson became its first American president.
In the near five decades, the ISCSC has developed into a dynamic international organization. Although a majority of its members reside in the United States of America, over thirty foreign countries are represented in its membership. The dynamism of the society has been maintained over the years in part through its Annual Meeting and the participation of scholars such as Talcott Parsons, Hayden White, Immanuel Wallerstein, Gordon Hewes, André Gunder Frank, Marshall Sahlins, Lynn White Jr. and Jeremy Sabloff.
The ISCSC focuses on the research of the origins and transformation of world civilizations in history. Beneath and beyond the tradition, we are now exploring new research topics on current civilizational clashes or integration and civilizational futures. The goal is to interrogate the impacts of the ongoing economic globalization, surging ecological consciousness, and proliferation of internet technology on the development of world civilizations.
The ISCSC is committed to the notion that complex, civilizational problems need diverse, multidisciplinary analyses. Initially the members of the Society came from history, anthropology, and sociology; now, the Society includes such disciplines as philosophy, psychology, comparative religions, economics, political theory, literary criticism and textual analysis, art history, comparative government, comparative literature, science and technology, linguistics, archaeology, architecture, geography, biology, physics and ethnohistory.
By joining the ISCSC membership, you will have the opportunities for scholar exchanges through subscription to the society’s journal Comparative Civilizations Review (CCR), invitation for the Society conference, and posting items on the ISCSC Newsletter and Web page. You can also submit your papers or book reviews to CCR.
